About this tool

Browsers, phones and search results each look for icons at different sizes. This tool produces the common set: a multi-size favicon.ico (16, 32 and 48 px), favicon PNGs at 16 and 32 px, an Apple touch icon at 180 px, and Android/Chrome icons at 192 and 512 px. You can download each file separately or take everything as one ZIP.

Start from a square image of at least 512 × 512 px for the sharpest results. The favicon.ico is a valid ICO file with PNG-compressed entries, checked after it is built. Transparency is kept in the PNG and ICO files; the Apple touch icon is placed on a solid background because iOS does not support transparent touch icons.

Formats and browser compatibility

Accepted input: PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF or BMP.

The generated set works in all current browsers. Raster images only: SVG files are not accepted by this version. Non-square images can be fitted with padding or cropped from the centre.

Very small sizes cannot hold much detail, so simple, bold designs work best. After uploading the files to your site, a browser may keep showing the old icon until its cache clears.

Practical uses

  • Add a favicon to a new website.
  • Prepare home-screen icons for a progressive web app.
  • Replace an outdated site icon with a crisp multi-size set.

Tips for better results

  • Use a bold, simple, square design with generous padding.
  • Place favicon.ico at your site root and add the generated link tags to your <head>.
  • Pick a background colour that matches your brand for the touch icon.

Frequently asked questions

Which files does it create?

favicon.ico (16, 32, 48 px), favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180 px), android-chrome-192x192.png and android-chrome-512x512.png, plus an HTML snippet.

Is favicon.ico really needed?

Modern browsers also accept PNG icons, but favicon.ico at the site root is still requested by many tools and older browsers, so including it is a safe choice.

Why does the touch icon have a background?

iOS fills transparent areas of touch icons with black, so the tool places your image on a colour you choose instead.
