About this tool
Body mass index is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. A person who is 1.75 metres tall and weighs 70 kg has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9. The World Health Organization groups adult BMI as under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy weight range, 25 to 29.9 overweight and 30 and above obesity range.
BMI is a quick screening number, not a measure of health. It cannot tell muscle from fat, it does not show where weight is carried, and the categories do not fit everyone equally, for example very muscular people or older adults. It also applies to adults aged 20 and over. For children and teenagers, doctors compare BMI with percentile charts for their age and sex, which this calculator does not do.
Use the result as a starting point for a conversation with a doctor or other health professional, who can look at your whole situation. This calculator gives general information and is not medical advice.
How it is calculated
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In pounds and inches, the same number is 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)².
The weight range uses the BMI limits 18.5 and 24.9 with your height.
Worked examples
- 70 kg at 175 cm gives a BMI of 22.9, which is in the healthy weight range.
- 154 lb at 5 ft 9 in gives a BMI of 22.7, about the same as the first example.
Tips for better results
- Measure height without shoes and weight at the same time of day for steadier numbers.
- Treat BMI as one number among several. Waist size, fitness and medical history matter too.
- If you are worried about your weight, speak to a doctor or other health professional.
Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared.
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, the WHO healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9. It is a screening range, not a personal target.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Often not. It does not separate muscle from fat, so a muscular person can have a high BMI without excess body fat.
Can I use it for a child?
No. Children and teenagers are assessed with age and sex percentile charts.
