GPA Calculator

Enter your courses as a letter grade and credits, one per line, to see your GPA on the common 4.0 scale.

Enter your values

Use letters (A+ to F) or grade points such as 3.5. Leave the credits out for 1 credit.

  • Uses the common unweighted 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on). Your school's scale may differ.

How to use GPA Calculator

  1. Type one course per line: the letter grade, a comma and the credits, such as A, 3.
  2. You can also use grade points such as 3.5 instead of a letter.
  3. Leave the credits out if every course has the same weight.
  4. Read your GPA, the total credits and the quality points.

About this tool

Grade point average turns letter grades into numbers and averages them, giving courses with more credits more weight. On the usual unweighted 4.0 scale an A is 4.0, an A− is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3, a B is 3.0 and so on down to F at 0. Each course contributes its grade points times its credits, and the GPA is the total divided by the total credits.

This calculator uses that common scale. Schools differ. Some give an A+ extra points, some do not use plus and minus grades, and some weight honors or advanced courses higher. Others use a different scale altogether, so treat the result as a close estimate and check your school's own rules.

To plan ahead, add courses with the grades you hope to get and see how the GPA would change. A grade in a course with more credits moves the GPA more than the same grade in a course with fewer.

How it is calculated

Quality points for a course = grade points × credits.

GPA = total quality points ÷ total credits.

Worked examples

  • A (3 credits), B+ (4), A− (3) and B (2) give 42.3 quality points over 12 credits, a GPA of 3.52.
  • Two courses of 3 credits each, an A and a C, give a GPA of 3.00, because the grade points 4.0 and 2.0 average to 3.0.

Tips for better results

  • Include the credits for every course. Without them each course counts the same.
  • To find a cumulative GPA, enter all courses from every term, or work out the term GPA first.
  • If your school uses a different scale, use numeric grade points in place of letters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my GPA?

Convert each grade to points, multiply by its credits, add the results and divide by the total credits.

What are the grade points for each letter?

On the common 4.0 scale: A is 4.0, A− is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, B− is 2.7, C+ is 2.3, C is 2.0, C− is 1.7, D+ is 1.3, D is 1.0 and F is 0.

Is this a weighted or unweighted GPA?

Unweighted. Honors and advanced courses are not given extra points.

Does it match my school's GPA?

It may differ slightly, because schools set their own scales and rounding.
