Your images are converted on this device and are never uploaded.

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white.

How to use AVIF to JPG

  1. Choose AVIF files, or drag them onto the drop area. Each file is checked by its real contents, not just its name.
  2. Adjust the quality if the output is JPG, otherwise leave the defaults.
  3. Press Convert to JPG. Conversion happens in your browser and each result is verified before it is offered.
  4. Check the preview and the before and after file sizes, and read any notes.
  5. Download each file, or take several at once as a ZIP.

About this tool

AVIF produces very small files at good quality, but support in editors, printers and upload forms is still patchy. This tool decodes the AVIF file and saves a standard JPG.

It uses the AVIF decoder built into your browser instead of shipping a heavy one, so it works only where your browser can open AVIF. If it cannot, the tool tells you, rather than pretending to convert. Transparency becomes white in the JPG.

Formats and browser compatibility

Accepted input: AVIF.

AVIF decoding is available in Chrome 85+, Edge 121+, Firefox 93+ and Safari 16.4+. Older browsers cannot decode AVIF and will show an error.

Only still AVIF images are supported. Animated AVIF files produce a still image or an error depending on your browser. HDR and 10-bit images are tone-mapped to standard 8-bit colour by the browser.

Practical uses

  • Open a downloaded AVIF in software that only supports JPG.
  • Upload an AVIF photo to a form that rejects it.
  • Share AVIF images with people on older devices.

Tips for better results

  • If conversion fails, try the latest version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
  • Expect the JPG to be larger than the AVIF at the same quality.
  • Choose PNG in the Image Converter to keep transparency.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it say my browser cannot decode AVIF?

Your browser has no AVIF decoder. Update to a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari 16.4+, then try again.

Is the file uploaded to be converted?

No. The browser decodes the file on your device.

Will the JPG look identical?

Very similar at high quality, but JPG is a different lossy codec, so some fine detail may differ.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is processed in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to Paul Digital or any other server.
