About this tool
Scientific notation writes a number as a value between 1 and 10 times a power of ten. 123,456 becomes 1.23456 × 10⁵, and 0.00042 becomes 4.2 × 10⁻⁴.
E-notation is the same idea as used by calculators and spreadsheets: 1.23456e+5. Engineering notation uses powers of ten that are multiples of three, such as 123.456 × 10³, to match prefixes like kilo and mega. Outside the UK this is often called scientific notation, and in the UK it may be called standard form.
How it is calculated
N = m × 10ⁿ, where 1 ≤ |m| < 10 and n is a whole number.
Worked examples
- 123,456 = 1.23456 × 10⁵
- 0.00042 = 4.2 × 10⁻⁴
- 6,022,000,000 = 6.022 × 10⁹
Tips for better results
- Large exponents work: type 1e30.
- Move the decimal point left for a positive exponent on large numbers.
