About this tool
Each binary digit is worth a power of two, counting from the right: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and so on. Add up the powers where there is a 1. For 1010 that is 8 + 2 = 10.
Computers store everything in binary, so this conversion shows up in networking, programming and electronics classes.
Formula
- Decimal = sum of (digit × 2^position), counting positions from 0 on the right.
- Example: 1101 = 1×8 + 1×4 + 0×2 + 1×1 = 13.
Examples
- Binary 1 = 1 (decimal)
- Binary 1010 = 10 (decimal)
- Binary 11111111 = 255 (decimal)
- Binary 100000000 = 256 (decimal)
Tips
- Long binary numbers are easier to read in groups of four digits. Spaces are ignored.
- Very long numbers are handled exactly, up to 200 digits.
- Negative numbers are accepted with a minus sign.
