About this tool
The hours worked are the time from the start to the end, minus any unpaid break. A shift from 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30 minute break is 8 hours of work. Payroll often uses decimal hours, where 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25, so the calculator shows both forms.
If the end time is not later than the start time, the end is taken to be on the next day, which is how night shifts such as 22:00 to 06:00 work. A shift cannot be longer than 24 hours in this calculator.
The weekly and monthly figures multiply a single shift by your days a week. The monthly figure uses 52 weeks divided by 12, which is 4.33 weeks a month. Pay figures are before tax and ignore overtime rates and rounding rules your employer may use.
How it is calculated
Minutes worked = end time − start time (plus 24 hours if the end is not later than the start) − unpaid break.
Decimal hours = minutes worked ÷ 60.
Worked examples
- 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30 minute break is 8 hours, or 8 × 5 = 40 hours over a five day week.
- A night shift from 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours with no break.
Tips for better results
- Enter breaks that are unpaid only. A paid break is part of the working time.
- Check your employer's rounding rules, since some round to the nearest 5 or 15 minutes.
- Use the Time Calculator to add up several shifts or tasks.
