About this tool

US federal income tax is progressive: each rate applies only to the slice of taxable income inside its bracket. Taxable income is your income minus pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction. For 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household.

Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income, and your effective rate is your total tax divided by your income. The effective rate is always lower. This estimate ignores credits, itemized deductions, capital gains and state tax.

How it is calculated

Taxable income = income − pre-tax deductions − standard deduction.
