Convert Image Size KB to MB

Convert an image size between KB and MB, and compress a picture to a limit given in MB.

or drop an image anywhere on this page

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a JPEG, PNG or WebP file, or drag it onto the drop area.
  2. Check the target size (currently 1 MB). It is editable, so change the number or the KB/MB unit if your limit differs.
  3. Press the button. The tool lowers the quality first, then reduces the dimensions step by step if the file is still too large.
  4. Compare the preview and the measured output size with the original, and read any notes or warnings.
  5. Download the new file. If it missed the target, adjust the target slightly or crop the original, and try again.

What to know before you convert Image Size KB to MB

Going from kilobytes to megabytes is a division: divide the KB by 1,024 to get MB. So 512 KB is 0.5 MB, 1,024 KB is exactly 1 MB, 2,048 KB is 2 MB and 150 KB is about 0.15 MB. Going the other way, multiply the MB by 1,024. Some operating systems and websites divide by 1,000 instead, which is why the same file can show a slightly different size in different places; the difference is about 2 percent. This is a unit conversion only and does not change the file. The compressor above is for when the unit is not the problem but the size is: if a form says your picture must be under 1 MB, enter 1 MB and the tool lowers quality and, if needed, dimensions until the saved file fits, then shows the measured result. A file cannot be made larger in useful quality by this conversion, since extra size does not add detail.

Converting KB to MB is arithmetic, and this page explains it. The tool then lets you compress a picture to a limit stated in MB. The size you enter is a goal, not a promise: the result depends on the original image, its dimensions, its complexity, its format and your browser's encoder, and the tool reports the real size instead of assuming it.

Recommended settings and supported formats

The target starts at 1 MB. Change it to the MB limit you were given. Decimals such as 1.5 MB are accepted.

Accepted input: JPEG, PNG and WebP (WebP depends on your browser). HEIC and AVIF are not supported. PNG is lossless, so it can only get smaller with fewer pixels unless you choose JPEG or WebP output.

Practical uses

  • Checking whether a file in KB fits an MB limit
  • Compressing a photo to a limit stated in MB
  • Understanding why two programs show different sizes for the same file

Tips for a smaller file

  • Divide KB by 1,024 for MB, or multiply MB by 1,024 for KB.
  • Leave a small margin under the limit, because programs round differently.
  • To meet a limit in KB, use the KB size pages instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert KB to MB?

Divide the KB by 1,024. For example, 512 KB is 0.5 MB and 2,048 KB is 2 MB.

Why does my computer show a different size?

Some systems use 1,000 instead of 1,024 for each step, so the same file can look a few percent different.

Can I make an image bigger in MB?

You can enlarge dimensions or save at higher quality, but that does not add real detail. This tool is for making files smaller.
